My friends call me Matty, born and raised in Alaska with an appreciation for cultural differences instilled by my parents. I have a passion for anything outdoors; ice climbing, skiing, bicycles, hiking, hunting, and fishing for a start. My formal education took place in Iowa and Colorado with a BA in Applied Geography and a minor in Cultural Anthropology from the Univ. of N. Colorado. Three of the greatest experiences of my life other than college and the couch surfing that followed were my 2000 mile bike ride down the west coast, backpacking around northern Europe and the winter I spent in Girdwood, Alaska as a ski bum. I am a former framer, landscaper, truck driver, and oil field worker who wouldn't go back to any former profession now that I'm in the classroom teaching. I look forward to instilling in young people a sense of cultural appreciation, passion for learning and the ability to know that life is full of fantastic opportunities no matter what challenges may come. Oh.... and i really like boats.....
